Lang’s Sawyer-Massey Steam Engine came to the Village in
1985 to replace our previously decommissioned portable George White Steam
Engine. The Sawyer-Massey is a traction engine and has served Lang for almost
30 years.
Two years ago, the Steam Engine was
decommissioned as the boiler had become too fragile to use. During the last two
years, we have researched the different options to repair or replace the
Sawyer-Massey. The costs for all options
are high and it was determined that we could repair our existing Sawyer-Massey
with a brand new boiler allowing us many years of service in the future. The Steam Engine
will be making the trip to Oliver’s Boilers in Auburn, Ontario where the new
boiler is currently being built. The engine will be dismounted from its boiler
and remounted onto the new boiler with any necessary repairs being done along
the way to the engine.
When the Sawyer-Massey returns next
season, Lang Pioneer Village will have the only known brand new old steam engine in the
Kawarthas. It will be available for everyone to see the incredible use of steam
power which was once used in rural Peterborough County.
